How does Krumboltz identify the factors that are influencing the client’s decision making? Give specific examples.
Dr.
Krumboltz addresses Caroline in the very beginning of the session by telling
her that he is not aware of what they will discuss, or why she is at the
session other than to make a training video.
He sets the stage for the Happenstance theory by using this approach
because he is interested in learning more about why she is there and he is
ready to make the next move when she identifies her reasons for the discussion
(Krumboltz, 2009). As Caroline describes
her thoughts about her professional career, Dr. Krumboltz uses open-ended
questioning and fantasy when he asks her to identify her fantasy career. She identifies a career where she will make 6
figures, work part-time, and sets her own schedule. He allows her to continue and asks her to be
even more specific, but then she begins to express her fear of her plans not
working (Krumboltz, 2009).
When Caroline
begins to express her fear of failure, Dr. Krumboltz explains the Happenstance
Theory. He advocates that it’s ok to
plan, but why be so rigid that if it doesn’t work out you are locked in to a
plan? By remaining flexible and living
life one step at a time, a person will be able to take their previous learning
experiences and apply them in other areas of their life and even other
vocations (Krumboltz, 2009). Throughout
the session, Dr. Krumboltz uses positive reinforcers to remind Caroline that
the path she is taking will lead her to success. He gives specific examples of how she is
using different counseling settings during her practicum and internship
settings to learn what population she will like working with the best. He ends the session on a positive note and
open for further exploration later.
