Authentic Sexuality

Authentic sexuality involves faithfully seeking out the biblical meaning and purpose of why God created us as sexual beings.  The author proposes six basic principles which they believe lead us to authentic sexuality.  Human sexuality is recognized in the diversity between the male and female and the union created within them; sexuality is a gift created by God intended to draw us into a deeper relationship with ourselves and God; we are born with an instinctive nature for sexual pleasure which is best developed within a healthy family environment; sexuality and spirituality are interrelated; after the fall of man, sexuality was perverted and needed redemption; and Christ offers healing and restoration of our potential for authentic sexuality (Balswick & Balswick, 2008).
Self-understanding involves becoming open with physical, emotional and intellectual experiences.  We were created to share our lives with others and to experience a rich and rewarding life.  By sharing our lives, we become able to give and receive positive messages about the nature of our feelings and how we want to experience pleasure and safety about our sexuality.  By viewing healthy sexuality as a necessary God given gift, parents can raise their children into seeking meaningful and caring relationships with others (Balswick & Balswick, 2008).
Spirituality is a vital part of experiencing authentic sexuality.  It can affirm or deny our behavior and belief about ourselves.  Sexual fulfillment is the climax between two people who give honestly and openly of themselves.  The Bible describes sexuality as a gift from God and it is vital to the creation of species.  Because of the fall of man, sexuality has become a part of our fallen nature and it is prone to becoming sinful, just as other parts of our being.  Because of this, we have to recognize that we are in need of healing and redemption of our sexual attitudes and behaviors.  Because we were created as sexual beings, we need more than just an acknowledgement of our nature and a set of rules to follow.  Our God is a generous God and when we depend on him for the fulfillment of our needs, he will guide us and comfort us.  More than just merely depending on God for fulfillment, we must challenge ourselves to ask God to reveal to us the areas in our lives that need healing and transformation.  Our sexual nature is an important place for us to learn not only who we are, but Who we belong to (Balswick & Balswick, 2008).
