Homosexuality and The Bible
I believe
after reading this week’s assignment, the authors did a fantastic job of
dealing with the subject of homosexuality.
Initially, I’ve adopted a quite conservative approach to the topic,
presuming that homosexuality is quite obviously a choice. After reading the information provided by the
authors, I’ve been able to adopt a more informed perspective. Balswick and Balswick (2008) describe
homosexuality as more than just a choice, and they include research findings to
support a more bio psychosocial point of view.
Similar to diseases of addiction, a person born with a biological
predisposition to homosexuality who is also exposed to the social influences of
homosexuality, have a greater chance of identifying themselves as homosexuals.
Also,
similar to addictions, this does not provide an excuse to continue engaging in
a spiritually and physically damaging lifestyle. While homosexuals may not be responsible for
their orientation, they are responsible for how they respond and behave in that
orientation. Just as the heterosexual
struggles with sexual addictions and must seek healing, the homosexual should
also seek out support to discontinue living a homosexual lifestyle. Genesis 19:1-11, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus
20:13, and Judges 19:16-24 all describe homosexual behavior and not a condition. As a result of the original sin, we are all
fallen humans and are sinful beings.
Christ provides redemption from sin and as a heterosexual Christian, I
should remember my sin is not judged any differently than the sin of a
homosexual (Matthew 7:2). Jesus provides
clear instruction on how to treat not only homosexuals, but everyone, “You
shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, NASB).
